Career Opportunities

RDN Transportation Services operates the transit system for eight electoral areas, the District of Lantzville, the Town of Qualicum Beach, the City of Parksville and the City of Nanaimo.

Service operates seven days a week and on select statutory holidays. All buses in our fleet are low floor accessible and include bicycle racks. Additionally, the fleet is fuelled with biodiesel which reduces tailpipe emissions and greenhouse gases.

It is an exciting time for RDN Transportation Services as there are plans in place for expansion and service improvements which will lead to an increase in employment opportunities.

A Career with RDN Transit

Drivers with RDN Transportation Services begin their employment as a casual for Transit and HandyDART which means they are on-call and there is no guarantee of hours of work. Upon being hired, a casual driver will be placed on the casual call-out list and will be called for work based on their position on the call-out list. A casual's position on the casual call-out list is determined by a casual's hire date.

With respect to becoming permanent, permanent driving positions that become available are posted internally and casual drivers who are interested in becoming permanent can apply. Applications from permanent employees will be considered first and, if there are no qualified permanent employees who have applied, consideration will then be given to any casuals that have applied.

Drivers with RDN Transportation Services have a dynamic job as they are exposed to a variety of working conditions and people on a daily basis. Drivers require good judgment, safe driving habits, and an ability to deal with a variety of people and provide excellent customer service. Drivers are also responsible for bus servicing which includes fueling, cleaning, and other related duties.

In general, casual drivers are hired to provide coverage for permanent drivers (ie. vacation, illness, etc.) and therefore it is expected that casuals will be available for work on both advanced and short notice and able to respond to calls for work within the required timelines. Additionally, drivers are required to work various shifts including split shifts, weekends, evenings and statutory holidays.
