The RDN owns and operates two solid waste management facilities in the Regional District of Nanaimo, the Regional Landfill and Church Road Transfer Station. Both facilities operate under an approved Solid Waste Management Plan and serve 140,000 people.
The Regional Landfill is located near the southern border of the City of Nanaimo and is the only landfill site in the region. The Regional Landfill receives more than 53,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year from School District 68 representing 90,000 customer transactions. In addition, the facility annually receives 22,000 tonnes of solid waste from the Church Road Transfer Station in School District 69 for a total of 75,000 tonnes. The Regional Landfill receives about 7,000 tonnes of recyclable material annually, comprised mainly of yard waste, and representing 33,000 customer transactions.
The Church Road Transfer Station is located just outside the southwestern border of the City of Parksville and serves commercial and residential customers in School District 69. This facility receives more than 22,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year, representing 54,000 customer transactions. The Church Road Transfer Station receives about 6,000 tonnes of recyclable material annually, comprised mainly of yard waste, and representing 36,000 customer transactions.
In addition to receiving garbage from commercial customers and the general public, both facilities provide areas for collection of Recyclable Material (including garden waste and scrap metal), Construction/Demolition Waste, and disposal of Controlled Waste.
RDN Solid Waste Facilities are provided to safely manage and dispose of waste that cannot be composted, reused, recycled or otherwise diverted from disposal. Please consider the 4 R’s — reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink — before bringing materials to the Regional Landfill or Transfer Station. Check the Disposal Alternatives and RDN’s on-line Recycling Directory for many local recycling options in your area.
