Voting Eligibility

Voting as a Resident Elector

You are eligible to vote as a Resident Elector in an RDN Electoral Area if you meet all of the following criteria:
  • You are 18 years of age or older on general voting day;
  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You have lived in British Columbia for at least six months immediately before you register to vote;
  • You have been a resident of an RDN Electoral Area for at least 30 days before voting; and
  • You are not disqualified by the Local Government Act, or any other Act, or the Courts from voting in a local election.
You do not need to own property to vote as a Resident Elector

Voting as a Non-Resident Property Elector

You are eligible to vote as a non-resident property elector if you are not eligible to register as a Resident Elector, and you meet all of the following criteria:
  • You are 18 years of age or older on general voting day;
  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You have lived in British Columbia for at least six months before you register to vote;
  • You are not disqualified by the Local Government Act, any other Act, or the Courts from voting in a local election;
  • And, have owned property in the jurisdiction where you intend to vote for at least 30 days before you register to vote.
  • You have not registered as a non-resident property elector in relation to any other parcel of property in the voting jurisdiction
  • If there is more than one registered owner on title, you have the written consent of the majority of the other owners authorizing you to be registered as the non-resident property elector. (Only one non-resident property elector is entitled to vote per property)
