NOTICE OF NOMINATION PERIOD

PUBLIC NOTICE is given to the electors of the Regional District of Nanaimo that a general local election will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2005 to elect one Director from each of the following Electoral Areas - 'A', 'B', 'C', 'E', 'F', 'G' and 'H', for a three year term commencing December 2005 and terminating in December 2008.

Candidates shall be nominated in writing by two duly qualified electors of the Regional District of Nanaimo. At the time of filing the nomination documents, the candidate shall also file a written disclosure as required under the Financial Disclosure Act.

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older;
  • resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office.
Nominations for qualified candidates will be received by the Chief or Deputy Chief Election Officer at the offices of the Regional District of Nanaimo, 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, B.C. between the hours of 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the fourth (4th) day of October 2005 and 4:00 p.m. on Friday, the fourteenth (14th) day of October 2005 and during that period the nomination documents shall only be received on regular office days and hours. Nomination documents may be obtained at the Regional District of Nanaimo Administration Office during regular business hours.

AVAILABILITY OF LIST OF ELECTORS

Beginning Tuesday, October 4, 2005 until the close of general voting for the Elections, a copy of the list of registered electors will, upon signature, be available for public inspection at the offices of the Regional District of Nanaimo between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding holidays.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

An elector may request that personal information respecting the elector be omitted from or obscured on the list in accordance with Section 63 of the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm, Friday, October 14, 2005.

OBJECTION OF REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR

An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with Section 64 of the Local Government Act until 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2005.

An objection may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the Regional District and can only be made on the basis that the person whose name appears has died or is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the Regional District of Nanaimo.
