Updates on Flooding in the RDN

The Regional District of Nanaimo's (RDN) Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been operating since Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 2am to monitor river levels and respond to any calls from the public. Currently the river levels are receding and minimal precipitation is forecasted for today.

Many of the roadways within the region that were previously closed are now open. Flood waters remain on several roads and those roads may be subject to localized closures.

There are a few situations in the RDN that are being monitored and assessed:

  • MacMillian Road and Jinglepot Road - Are flooded and subject to localized closures.
  • Rumming Road - As damage is extensive, a portion of Rumming Road is anticipated to remain closed for a significant period of time.
  • Melrose Road - As damage is extensive, a portion of Melrose Road is anticipated to remain closed for a significant period of time.
  • Perry's RV Park
    • Martindale Road was flooded and closed but is now open.
    • The RV Park has sustained damaged due to do flooding.
    • The RDN will be sending staff to assess the damage to the park. Assistance and accommodation is currently being provided to the residents of the Park.
"I want to commend the work of emergency service personnel and volunteers, they have responded quickly and efficiently to the extreme weather situation," commented Chair Veenhof. "We will continue to monitor river levels and the weather forecast, and provide information to the public."

Notices and alerts will be posted posted on our website and on our social media feeds. Residents are reminded to call 911 for any life threatening emergency and can report non-life threatening flooding to the RDN at 778-762-3553.
